Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Work, personal and social life and even routines like managing household chores have now become sources of stress.

Simply speaking, one needs to understand the problem if one is to be able to find a solution! 

Comprehending the problem is as important as addressing it. Understanding could simply mean trying and figuring out what is contributing to stress. Is it only our perception, or is it something that happens to us? When stressed, our body (physiologically), mind (cognitively) and the experience of emotions (emotionally) change dramatically. Focusing on this will help differentiate normal responses from various symptoms of stress. Another important reason to get to the root of it all is that stress in one area of life can spill over to another area, affecting our overall sense of well-being.

Is stress good or bad?

  • Have we confused the normal or natural stress response with something which should be avoided or completely removed from our lives?
  • Are we attributing every negative experience to stress?

Every change, whether pleasant or unpleasant, demands some level of coping. Stress responses help the body adjust to new situations. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. However, beyond a certain point, stress turns into "distress". It needs attention when one is having exaggerated reactions to everything happening around or toward small stressors, which may be affecting their quality of life.

Are there differences in experiencing stress?

The same stressor can cause different people to react in different ways. Given the same set of environments and challenges, one person might experience stress and the other might not. Not only does it differ from person to person, but the same person may react and deal with stress differently at different times and under different circumstances. One has to introspect about how we look at ourselves. Do we tend to label ourselves by our ability to deal with stress?

Whether or not a stressor is experienced as discomforting is influenced by a variety of personal and contextual factors including personality, skills and abilities, constraints, resources, norms and the support system in place. The bottom line is that we need not beat ourselves up and identify ourselves as "strong" or "weak" based on how we experience and react to stress.

What are the triggers for stress?

Some factors of stress are evident and universal, like the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, others may often be "in the eye of the beholder". Broadly, the triggers can be identified as external or internal.

External triggers could be things like:

  • Change in employment status (new job or loss of job)
  • Moving to a new place
  • Change in relationship status (breakup, getting married)
  • Physical health
  • Emergencies 
  • Interpersonal issues (spouse, colleagues)

Internal triggers of stress can include:

  • Negative thinking
  • Social anxiety
  • Aggression
  • Suppressed emotions
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Overwork or exhaustion
  • Sense of "loss of control" over the outcome of a situation

Is stress the same as anxiety?

In a broader perspective, both stress and anxiety are responses in our body and are part of the body’s natural flight or fight response. There is a significant overlap of the symptoms one experiences in both conditions. However, there exists a fine line between stress and anxiety.

  • Stress is the response to a trigger and subsides once the situation has been resolved.
  • Anxiety is a persistent feeling of apprehension and dread in situations that are not actually threatening.

There might not be an identifiable trigger or the symptoms might persist even after the situation has been resolved.

Models of stress

Although there could be multiple factors contributing to being stressed, being aware of the models will eventually help to identify the patterns and address concerns specifically.

  • Stress as a response - It states that stress is a defence mechanism and usually is a response. The outcomes could be positive or negative based on one's interpretation and how it does make you feel. It goes through stages of alarm, resistance and exhaustion.
  • Stress as a stimulus - It assumes that change is inherently stressful. Significant life events or changes that demand response, adjustment, or adaptation could be perceived as stress. life events demand the same level of adjustment across the population. There is a common threshold of adjustment beyond which illness will result.
  • Stress as a transaction - It focuses on the interaction between a person and their complex environment. This model emphasizes that an event is only stressful if a person thinks about it in that way.
  • Person-Environment Fit - This assumes that individual differences exist with regard to needs and abilities, and that stress is created when there is a mismatch between the demands that an individual is exposed to and the resources that he/she possesses.

 

Types of stress

Insights about the type of stress one experiences will help individualize the management strategies which would be most effective for an individual. There are various ways to classify stress commonly used in psychology, which include:

  • Acute stress - It is usually short-term. One experiences the emotions for a short while, the body returns to normal relatively soon. It shakes you up a bit and requires a response for which one is not adequately prepared. It can be experienced as a reaction to a new or challenging situation.
  • Episodic acute stress - It is when one experiences periods of acute stress on a frequent basis. In this, one does not get the time to return to a relaxed and calm state. It makes one feel as if moving from one crisis to the other.
  • Chronic stress - This is longer lasting and stress is consistently present. It can take a serious toll on one's mind and body.
